Claim your game

If you make a game listed on Breakpoint, you can claim its listing. A claimed listing shows a verified mark and your name. You hear from us if the proof goes missing, and you have a say if someone appeals ownership. Claiming is free.

How to claim

  1. Sign in to Breakpoint.
  2. Open the game's page and press Claim it, next to "Made this game?".
  3. Choose a way to prove you run the game, add your token there, and press Verify now.

Each claim gets its own token: bp- followed by 32 characters. A token is valid for 7 days. If it runs out, get a new one on the claim page.

Ways to prove it

The claim page offers the ways that fit where your game is hosted.

  • Meta tag: add <meta name="breakpoint-verification" content="bp-…" /> to the <head> of the game's page.
  • File: serve the token as plain text at /.well-known/breakpoint-verification.txt on the game's domain.
  • DNS record: add one TXT record. See the DNS record below. You can also have your DNS provider add it for you.
  • Platform page: for games on itch.io, GitHub or Steam, put the token on the game's page there: the itch.io page description, a comment in the GitHub README, or the Steam store page's About this game. A moderator confirms itch.io claims, and Steam claims when the listing names no maker.

Games on shared hosts such as github.io, itch.io, Vercel or Netlify don't get the DNS option: the host's owner controls that DNS, not you.

The DNS record

TypeNameValue
TXT_breakpoint.yourgame.combreakpoint-verification=bp-…

The name is _breakpoint in front of your game's host, without www. A game at play.example.com uses _breakpoint.play.example.com. Most DNS providers add the domain for you, so in their name field you type only _breakpoint (or _breakpoint.play). Any TTL works.

New records usually show within a few minutes, sometimes longer. If Verify now doesn't find yours yet, wait a few minutes and try again. The claim page shows the exact name and value for your game.

Automatic setup with Domain Connect

Some DNS providers support Domain Connect, an open standard that lets your provider add a record for a service once you approve it. When your domain's provider supports it and has turned on Breakpoint, the DNS step on the claim page shows Set up automatically with and your provider's name, above the manual record.

  1. On the claim page, choose DNS record and press Set up automatically.
  2. Sign in at your DNS provider and check the change: one TXT record named _breakpoint, for Breakpoint's "Game ownership claim". Some providers also show the Breakpoint account making the claim, "for @username". Check that it's yours.
  3. Approve it. Your provider sends you back to the claim page.
  4. The page checks for the record by itself for about a minute, then shows your claim as verified.

Nothing else on your domain changes. Come back in the same browser and Breakpoint account that started the claim: an approval that comes back anywhere else doesn't count. If the setup fails or you cancel it, nothing is added, and you can add the record yourself.

Providers turn on Breakpoint one at a time. If you don't see the button, add the record yourself. It works the same way.

Didn't start the claim?

Only approve a Breakpoint record for a claim you started yourself. If someone sends you a link asking you to approve one, don't. If you already approved a record for someone else's claim, Breakpoint switches it off when your browser comes back to us. Then delete the _breakpoint TXT record at your DNS provider, and claim the game yourself if it's yours.

After you claim

  • Keep the proof in place. Breakpoint checks every claim again every 30 days. We tell you after the first missed check. If the proof is missing on 2 checks in a row, the claim lapses. The listing itself stays.
  • To give up a claim, release it from Your claims. After that you can remove the record, tag or file.
  • Claiming again makes a new token. Replace the old TXT value or add the new one next to it: any record with the current token passes.
