Fatal Core Dump

Solve a space station murder by debugging a real binary and its core dump

Fatal Core Dump is a murder mystery set on an asteroid mining station in 2216. An airlock has failed, and you must decide whether it was negligence, an accident or murder. The evidence is a real Linux program, its C source and a core dump from the crash. You read the story through station emails, then use GDB to work out what happened and fill in answers about how the failure was caused.

About Fatal Core Dump

It trains GDB, reading C and x86_64 assembly, and how a Linux program lays out its memory. It suits programmers who already know some C and want to practise debugging and reverse engineering.

It is free to play on the website with no login. A Linux VM with GDB runs in the browser, but it is slow, so the author suggests GDB on your own machine or in Docker. The source is on GitHub.
