Programming games for PC and Steam
Breakpoint lists 74 programming games for PC, link-checked every 12 hours. Updated 26 Oct 2026.
Puzzle and automation games you install on Windows, Mac or Linux, most of them on Steam. You win by writing code: assembly for imaginary chips, scripts for farm drones, logic for a CPU you build yourself. The price is on every listing.
Assembly and Zachtronics-style
Write tiny programs for made-up machines with a handful of instructions, then make them faster and shorter.
- TIS-100PaidAssembly · Write assembly for a broken computer made of tiny parallel nodes
- Shenzhen I/OPaidAssembly · Build circuits and program their chips in compact assembly
- ExapunksPaidAssembly · Write code for tiny agents that hack through networks
- SIC-1Assembly · Write assembly for a computer that has only one instruction
- Human Resource MachinePaidAssembly · Program office workers with simple assembly-style commands
- 7 Billion HumansPaidAssembly · Program a crowd of office workers who all run your code at once
Build a computer
Start from logic gates and work up to a CPU that runs your own programs.
Automation in real languages
Script drones, robots and gadgets in Python-like or real languages, and let the code play for you.
- The Farmer Was ReplacedPaidPython · Write Python-like code to automate a farming drone
- BitburnerJavaScript · Write JavaScript scripts that hack servers in a cyberpunk idle game
- ScreepsPaidJavaScript · Strategy game where your own code controls every unit
- ReplicubePaidLua · Write Lua code that rebuilds 3D voxel objects
- Retro GadgetsPaidLua · Build retro gadgets and program their CPUs in Lua
- while True: learn()PaidMachine learning · Build machine learning flowcharts that sort data for clients
Hacking games
Terminals, exploits and scripts in a fictional network. Programming meets heist.
- HacknetPaidShell · Type UNIX-style commands to hack networks and uncover a story
- hackmudPaidJavaScript · Hack, script and scheme in a shared online world using JavaScript
- Grey HackPaidSecurity · Hack generated networks and write your own tools in GreyScript
- Midnight ProtocolPaidSecurity · Type terminal commands to hack networks in a tactical story game
- DuskersPaidShell · Command drones through a terminal to scavenge derelict ships
Visual engineering puzzles
No text code: you lay out arms, belts and molecules, and the solution runs like a program.
- Opus MagnumPaidVisual · Build and time alchemy machines, then optimize them against the world
- SpaceChemPaidVisual · Lay out visual programs that build molecules in chemical reactors
- InfinifactoryPaidVisual · Build 3D factories from blocks to assemble products for aliens
- Kaizen: A Factory StoryPaidVisual · Program factory tools on a timeline to build 1980s electronics
- MOLEK-SYNTEZPaidVisual · Program a molecular synthesizer to turn chemicals into target molecules

PC programming games: common questions
What is a Zachtronics-style game?
- Zachtronics made TIS-100, Shenzhen I/O, SpaceChem, Opus Magnum and Exapunks: puzzle games where you build a working solution from simple parts or instructions, then compare its size and speed with other players on histograms. Other studios now make games in the same style, like SIC-1, Turing Complete and Kaizen.
Which programming game should I play first?
- Human Resource Machine needs no coding experience and teaches the ideas behind assembly. If you already code, try TIS-100 or Exapunks. If you'd rather write real Python-like code, The Farmer Was Replaced and Bitburner are good starts.
Are there free programming games on Steam?
- Yes. SIC-1 is free on Steam, and Robocode runs for free on your own machine. For more free games, most browser games on Breakpoint cost nothing; see the free programming games list.
