Coding games to play with friends

Breakpoint lists 71 programming games you play with or against other people, link-checked every 12 hours. Updated 26 Oct 2026.

Most programming games are solo. These aren't. Race a friend to solve the same task, put your bot on a ladder against other players' code, enter a contest as a team, or set up a private leaderboard for your team at work.

Live duels and races

Solve the same problem as someone else at the same time, and see who gets there first.

Bot ladders: your code plays while you're away

Upload a program and it plays matches against other players' programs around the clock.

Team contests

Enter as a team: most CTFs, plus contests like the ICFP Programming Contest and Battlecode.

Private leaderboards for your team or friends

Everyone plays alone, but you compare scores on a board only your group can see.

Coding games for team building

A coding game is an easy team activity because everyone can join at their own level and nobody needs to prepare. The simplest is a December tradition: create a private Advent of Code leaderboard, share the join code in your team chat, and compare stars each morning. For a lunch session, pick a short live format like a CSS challenge or a coding duel, project it, and play a few rounds together. For something longer, enter a CTF or a bot contest as a team and split the work. Keep it optional, celebrate clever solutions as much as fast ones, and never tie it to performance reviews.

Multiplayer coding games: common questions

Can I play coding games with friends online for free?

Yes. Advent of Code and Everybody Codes have free private leaderboards, Codebattle runs free live duels, and most CTFs let you enter as a team at no cost.

Which coding games have private leaderboards?

Advent of Code is the best known: create a board, share the code, and everyone's stars show up in one place. The list above shows every listing that has one.

What's a good coding game for a team event?

For a one-off session, a live duel or a short CSS challenge works well. For something that runs over weeks, a private Advent of Code leaderboard in December is hard to beat.
